A Closer Look

Everyone has something come along in their life that gives them inspiration, defines a part of their existence, and forever changes their outlook on life. Roller Derby has done that for me.

I have the rare opportunity as a derby sister, friend, and fan of my fellow roller derby players to get to know some of these fascinating ladies on a personal level. I'd like to highlight some of Houston Roller Derby's brightest stars.

Goldie Bloxx skates for HRD's All Star team, HaRD Knocks, which is made up of 20 of the top skaters in the league. These 20 skaters are combined from HRD's 4 home teams: The Bayou City Bosses, Burlesque Brawlers, Machete Betties, and Psych Ward Sirens.

Goldie's home team is the Bayou City Bosses. Donning the number 007 on the track, she is definitely on a mission!

Goldie started skating with HRD in 2006. She was originally drafted to the Burlesque Brawlers and predominantly played in the Jammer position for her team in the 2006 season. As her name implies, her true love is blocking.

Goldie put herself back in the draft at the beginning of 2007 season and was quickly picked up by the Bayou City Bosses . It wasn't a surprise that a player of her caliber was chosen so quickly.

Goldie has a lot of attitude and many may fear her at first glance. But once they get to know her, it is easy to understand her forceful nature is simply passion for everything she does in life. She has a huge heart and is very prideful of her Christian up bringing. She wears a *bling* cross front and center on her helmet...true to her "Bossy" style. Goldie always leads her team in prayer before they skate onto the track, asking for both fun and safety in the game.

It's almost as if all the adornments on her helmet tell the story of the things she loves. Music is a big part of her life and one of her many other talents. If you are fortunate, you will hear her sing the National Anthem at one of our home bouts.

Thanks to our friend's at The Colonel's Roller Derby Roundup blog, you can here this audio clip of Goldie Singing "God Bless America" at the opening bout of the 2007 season. Goldie's address to our troops was heart felt and made us all proud to have been part of the exhibition game honoring our military branches.
